Nigeria becomes an Associate State

The Federal Republic of Nigeria became an Associate State on 04 June 2026, making a first step towards formal participation in the international measurement system.

Associate membership will allow Nigeria to take part in activities of the BIPM, through representation (without voting rights) at the General Conference on Weights and Measures (CGPM), and to join the CIPM Mutual Recognition Arrangement (CIPM MRA).

In addition to this they will have access to BIPM capacity building and e-learning activities.

Participation in the international measurement system

Following its accession, Nigeria, through its National Metrology Institute - Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON-NMI) - is eligible to join the CIPM Mutual Recognition Arrangement (CIPM MRA).

As a CIPM MRA Signatory, Nigeria will be able to participate in international scientific comparisons and develop Calibration and Measurement Capabilities (CMCs), as well as publish them in the CIPM MRA database (KCDB).
