The 2025 edition of the Metrology Summer School was held from 9–18 July 2025 at the Italian Physical Society (SIF) in Varenna. The theme of the school was “Future needs for Metrology: Climate Science, Quantum Technologies and the Digital Revolution”. The programme was structured as a series of modules, featuring a three-day core module, “Module II: Fundamentals of metrology and the digital transformation of measurement,” alongside a choice of two three-day optional modules: “Module I: Metrology for the quality of life and climate science” and “Module III: Physical and quantum metrology”. The school welcomed a world-class line-up of 23 lecturers, including four from the BIPM.
A total of 43 applications were received for sponsorship, from which four young metrologists were selected and sponsored by the National Metrology Institute of Switzerland (METAS). These four young metrologists - Mr Nesredin Nezir Hassen (Ethiopia), Mr Muhammad Malhan Amin and Mr Ganang Adhitama (Indonesia), and Mr Marcus Hlakola (South Africa) participated in the 2025 Varenna Summer School and subsequently completed a short placement at METAS. During their two-to-four-week placement, they received dedicated training and pursued specific metrology topics of interest, further enhancing their professional skills and expertise.
The BIPM acknowledges the generous contribution of METAS (Switzerland) for providing the funding through the CBKT programme.
