Summer School helps strengthen collaboration across Regional Metrology Organizations

Regional metrology experts from around the world exchanged practical experience and lessons learned during the 2026 Summer School for Regional Metrology Organization (RMO) Technical Committee and Working Group (TC/WG) Chairs, helping strengthen the consistent implementation of the CIPM Mutual Recognition Arrangement (CIPM MRA).

Held at the BIPM Headquarters in Sèvres from 30 June to 2 July 2026, the Summer School brought together 27 current, newly appointed and prospective TC/WG Chairs and Vice-Chairs representing all RMOs.

Sharing experience across the RMOs

One of the defining features of this year's programme was the extensive exchange of experience between the RMOs. The discussions helped participants identify common approaches while learning from differences in regional implementation of the CIPM MRA.

Participants shared practical approaches on topics including:

  • Calibration and Measurement Capability (CMC) reviews and reviewer training;
  • comparison coordination;
  • Technical Committee and Working Group management;
  • mentoring and support for countries and economies with emerging metrology systems;
  • maintaining reviewer continuity and institutional knowledge.

Participant perspectives

Participants highlighted both the opportunity to learn from colleagues across the RMOs and the balance between technical guidance and practical discussion.

Samia Mohamed, GULFMET Technical Committee Chair for Ionizing Radiation, said:

“It gave me the opportunity to exchange experiences with colleagues from different RMOs, helping me build valuable professional connections and bring back best practices to support metrology activities in my region.”

Mikołaj Woźniak, EURAMET Technical Committee Chair for Mass and related quantities, said:

“This summer school was highly beneficial, as it provided an opportunity to gain a detailed understanding of the CIPM MRA requirements and to discuss their practical implementation in activities associated with the TC Chair role, including CMC reviews and comparisons.”

Continuing collaboration

Finally, the discussions contributed to the development of a practical good-practice guide for RMO TC/WG Chairs intended to support the day-to-day operation of TC/WGs, promote greater consistency across RMOs and continue evolving as experience and good practice develop.

About RMO Technical Committee and Working Group Chairs

RMO TC/WG Chairs play a central role in maintaining the technical integrity and consistency of the CIPM MRA. They coordinate the review of Calibration and Measurement Capabilities (CMCs), oversee comparison programmes and support regional and inter-regional review processes.
