Join the WTO Thematic Session on the Role of Metrology in Facilitating Trade
11 November 2025 | 15:00–16:30 (Room D, WTO Headquarters and online)
Metrology—the science of measurement—plays a fundamental role in ensuring trust in products, compliance with standards, and the smooth flow of goods across borders. To explore this essential link between measurement and global trade, the World Trade Organization (WTO) will hold a Thematic Session on the Role of Metrology in Facilitating Trade on 11 November 2025, with participation from representatives of the international metrology community, including the BIPM.
This session takes place in a milestone year, marking both the 150th anniversary of the Metre Convention and the 70th anniversary of the International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML) Convention—two international agreements that continue to shape reliable and harmonized measurement worldwide.
Discussions will focus on how metrology supports the effective implementation of the WTO’s Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Agreement, reduces technical barriers, and enables developing and least-developed country Members to participate fully in the international measurement system.
Speakers will include representatives from National Metrology Institutes and international organizations from around the world, sharing perspectives on the role of metrology in areas such as new technologies, environmental protection, and health.
