Dr Martin Milton awarded OBE for services to measurement science

The BIPM is delighted to announce that its Director, Dr Martin Milton, has been appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2025 King’s Birthday Honours.

The award, granted by His Majesty King Charles III, highlights Dr Milton’s global impact on scientific measurement and international cooperation.

Since assuming leadership in 2013, Dr Milton has guided the BIPM through critical scientific and institutional milestones:

  • He played a central role in the redefinition of the International System of Units (SI), marking a new era in which units are defined by unchanging constants of nature.
  • He strengthened partnerships with national and regional metrology institutes, promoting measurement standards that support international trade, innovation and research.
  • He spearheaded capacity-building initiatives to extend metrological expertise and infrastructure to less-resourced nations.

What is the Order of the British Empire (OBE)?

The OBE is part of the UK’s honours system, recognising significant contributions across science, the arts, charity and public life. It has been part of the British honours tradition since its establishment by King George V in 1917.

Why this award matters

Recognition from His Majesty King Charles III, granted on the occasion of the King’s Official Birthday, underscores the global importance of measurement science.

Dr Milton’s work helps ensure global traceability in science, trade, health and climate measurement—vital in an era of digital transformation and evolving global challenges.

The BIPM’s 150th anniversary this year highlights the enduring legacy and international collaboration rooted in the 1875 Metre Convention.

Dr Milton says: “It is a privilege to be the Director of one of the oldest international organisations in the world... our work at the BIPM is a perfect example of international cooperation since all our Member States rely on global agreement on the SI and UTC.”

This honour reflects not only his personal leadership but also the collective efforts of the BIPM and its global partners.
