Happy World Metrology Day 2026!
This World Metrology Day, the BIPM is delighted to join the international metrology community in celebrating the measurements, collaborations and shared standards that support science, innovation, industry and everyday life around the world.
From protecting public health and monitoring the environment to supporting fair trade and reliable energy systems, trusted measurements support global cooperation, scientific progress and trust across borders.
In recognition of this, it is our great pleasure to celebrate 151 years since the signing of the Metre Convention and the enduring international collaboration it continues to represent today.
Watch this BIPM feature video, from last year’s 150th celebration, for a 2-minute introduction on how metrology — the science of measurement — became a cornerstone of modern life, and why it remains essential today and into the future.
World Metrology Day 2026: The Theme
This year the World Metrology Day theme, “Metrology: Building Trust in Policy Making,” specifically highlights the essential role trusted measurements play in supporting informed decisions, international cooperation and public confidence.
As described in our Joint BIPM-OIML Directors’ Statement earlier in the year:
'Reliable measurements provide the evidence policymakers depend on when addressing complex challenges. After all, when data is accurate, comparable and traceable, decisions can be taken with greater clarity and confidence.'
Furthermore, 'trust is strengthened when measurements are not only scientifically sound but also applied within clear and predictable legal frameworks.
While scientific metrology ensures that measurements are accurate and comparable across borders; legal metrology ensures that they are applied consistently and fairly in practice. Together, these two branches of metrology help translate policy objectives into practical provisions that serve the public interest.'
Around the world, this work is supported by Regional Metrology Organizations (RMOs), National Metrology Institutes (NMIs), Designated Institutes (DIs) and technical experts who collaborate to ensure that measurements remain reliable, comparable and fit for purpose.

Celebrating Around the World
This day is for everyone. From conferences, public lectures, laboratory open days and educational events, to technical workshops and outreach activities, see how World Metrology Day is being celebrated around the world here.
As part of the celebrations, UNESCO and the BIPM would like to invite you to our joint World Metrology Day webinar from 13:00–14:00 CEST (Paris time).
The webinar will explore how internationally recognized measurements support evidence-based policymaking and public trust, including in areas such as artificial intelligence and regulation. The programme includes keynote remarks from UNESCO and a panel discussion featuring speakers from international organizations, NMIs and the artificial intelligence community.
