Services to underpin the international measurement system
The international measurement system relies on a network of measurement standards maintained at national laboratories. These standards need to be compared or calibrated to ensure that measurements are harmonized world-wide.
Organizing comparisons and calibrations can be time-consuming and expensive, particularly if they require shipping hazardous materials or delicate instruments. The BIPM offers technical comparison and calibration services for selected quantities, to enable metrology institutes to calibrate or compare their standards easily.
The BIPM also realizes and disseminates the international reference time scale, UTC.
