Technician: Organic Programme
The BIPM seeks a Technician-Organic Programme for the following appointment:
- Grade: B7
- Contract: Full-time 5 year fixed-term appointment (with possibility of conversion to an indefinite appointment)

The Chemistry Department of the BIPM operates laboratories organizing international comparisons of peptide/protein and small organic primary reference materials and calibrators as well as capacity building and knowledge transfer programmes.
The post is in the Chemistry Department of the BIPM. The postholder reports to the Director of the Chemistry Department, with day-to-day supervision of the postholder’s activities by Project Leads in the Large and Small Organic Programmes.
Principal duties and responsibilities
The principal duties and responsibilities of the postholder will be to:
- Operate and run NMR and qNMR measurements on organic small molecule and peptide pure materials with measurements designed and supervised by project leads;
- Perform routine maintenance, cryogenic filling and quality assurance procedures on NMR instrument;
- Perform ion-chromatography and LC-UV methods on organic solutions following established procedures;
- Perform TGA, Karl Ficher Titration and Elemental Analysis following
ISO 17025 compliant procedures; - Prepare and ampoule materials and undertake homogeneity and stability testing of organic pure materials and solution following established procedures;
- Maintain low temperature storage facilities for organic chemicals and organic inventory;
- Train and support visiting scientists to autonomously operate instrumentation;
- Draft internal reports of laboratory work and present outputs at group meetings;
- Provide support for colleagues in research and development activities;
- Organize and perform purchases, equipment maintenance and chemical storage, manual handling and transportation, and waste management;
- Ensure the laboratory remains clean, organized, and compliant with safety and quality standards by applying good laboratory practices (GLP);
- Undertake additional tasks supporting the role as requested by the Department Director.
Qualifications
Ideal Candidate Profile
Academic background
- At a minimum a technical diploma in analytical chemistry (
2/3 years of professional education) at the level of BUT/DUT/BTS or equivalent.
Professional background
- At least
5 years of relevant experience within an analytical chemical/biochemistry laboratory; - Practical experience with organic analytical chemistry instrumentation and operating NMR instruments;
- Experience in organic analytical method development and validation and implementing analytical methods in compliance with
ISO 17025; - Previous experience in the operation of NMR (JEOL), ion chromatography (IC930, Metrohm), Elemetal analysis (Elementar Cube) and Agilent/Thermo LC-UV instruments, and associated data analysis software would be an advantage;
- Experience in the operation of either LC-UV or ion chromatography systems.
Skills and competencies
- Proficiency in spoken and written English and a willingness to reach a working knowledge of French within one year;

Terms of Employment & Benefits

5 year fixed-term appointment, with an initial probationary period of6 months, renewable once. - Competitive gross annual salary starting from
48 478 euros, plus allowances subject to eligibility, including compensation for an expatriate status. - Salaries and allowances exempt from income tax in France (French nationals and permanent residents in France subject to “taux effectif” of the French tax system).
