UNFCCC

Liaison: United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)

Links between the BIPM and UNFCCC

  • The BIPM is an observer organization to the UNFCCC (admitted by COP27 in 2022).
  • The BIPM participates in COP meetings and can submit statements to future COPs as well as to propose side events and/or exhibitions to represent the world-wide metrology community.

Purpose

UNFCCC is the parent treaty of the 2015 Paris Agreement and the 1997 Kyoto Protocol. The ultimate objective of these agreements is to stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that will prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system, in a time frame which allows ecosystems to adapt naturally and enables sustainable development. The Conference of the Parties (COP) is the supreme decision-making body of the Convention that meets every year, unless the Parties decide otherwise.

The BIPM and UNFCCC cooperate, through promoting the participation of NMI experts in the activities of the UNFCCC, to have long-term, stable and equivalent measurements contributing to high-quality earth observation, monitoring of climate variables, development of emission measurements. This cooperation also aims to support the effectiveness of mitigation strategies and the addition of renewable energy sources to national energy grids whilst retaining security of supply.
