Links between the BIPM and UNESCO

  • The General Conference of UNESCO, at its 42nd session in November 2023, adopted a resolution proclaiming 20 May of every year World Metrology Day following Decision 215 EX/41 adopted by the Executive Board of UNESCO at its 215th session in November 2022 welcoming and endorsing the recommendation to proclaim 20 May of each year world metrology day.
  • The BIPM participates at selected UNESCO events and vice versa.

Purpose

UNESCO seeks to build peace through international cooperation in Education, the Sciences and Culture. UNESCO's programmes contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals defined in Agenda 2030, adopted by the UN General Assembly in 2015.

The BIPM and UNESCO cooperate to ensure effective dissemination of information on the importance of the quality infrastructure and particularly metrology in the scientific and wider context.
