Dr Barry Inglis,1940-2025

The BIPM is deeply saddened by the news of the death of Dr Barry Inglis, the former President of the CIPM, on 4 July 2025.

Dr Barry Inglis was appointed the founding CEO of National Measurement Institute of Australia (NMIA) in 2004, as well as Australia’s first Chief Metrologist. He was a member of the CIPM from 2000 to 2019 and a Vice-President from 2002 to 2011.

In 2011 he was elected President of the CIPM and served for eight years, until 2019. He was the first Australian and only the second non-European to hold this position. During his time as President, he led the organization through two meetings of the General Conference on Weights and Measures (CGPM). He launched a governance review and reform of its processes, and contributed to the successful adoption of the historic revision of the International System of Units (SI) in 2018.

In October 2019, the CIPM decided to bestow honorary membership on Dr Barry Inglis in recognition of his accomplishments as President of the CIPM.

Dr Inglis will be remembered by all at the BIPM for his human qualities and his commitment to staff. His contributions to international metrology governance, and to the global scientific community, leave a lasting legacy.

We extend our condolences to his wife, Kay, his children and grandchildren.
