First CMCs from Tanzania and Bangladesh published in the KCDB
Milestone achieved by Tanzania and Bangladesh under the CIPM MRA
For the first time, both the United Republic of Tanzania and the People’s Republic of Bangladesh have declared calibration and measurement capabilities (CMCs) within the framework of the CIPM Mutual Recognition Arrangement (CIPM MRA). Their peer-reviewed CMCs are now published in the BIPM’s Key Comparison Database (KCDB), marking a significant milestone in the international recognition of their national measurement systems.
For Tanzania and Bangladesh, this achievement demonstrates the growing capacity of their national metrology systems to provide reliable measurements that support essential activities such as trade, regulation and public services.
To have CMCs published in the KCDB, National Metrology Institutes (NMIs) must:
- take part in international comparisons of measurement standards,
- demonstrate a reviewed and approved quality management system aligned with ISO/IEC 17025 (for calibration) or ISO 17034 (for reference materials),
- and undergo peer review within the CIPM MRA framework.
Building long-term capabilities
The publication of these first CMCs illustrates the impact of BIPM Capacity Building and Knowledge Transfer (CBKT) initiatives, which assist NMIs in strengthening their technical and quality systems and engaging effectively in the CIPM MRA. Tanzania has participated in BIPM activities as an Associate State since 2018, and Bangladesh since 2010. Their progress shows how sustained engagement leads to international recognition.
