Fourier Transform Mass Spectrometry for Isotope Ratio Measurements
Aim
The International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) — home to the original international prototypes of the kilogram and the metre — is an intergovernmental organization located near Versailles, France. Established by the Treaty of the Metre in 1875, the BIPM continues to play a central role in the global standardization of measurements, with support from 101 Member States.
National Metrology Institutes around the world invest significant effort in developing reliable measurement standards, including isotope ratio standards. To keep pace with emerging technologies, the Isotope Ratio and Organic Analysis Working Groups of the Consultative Committee for Amount of Substance (CCQM) are organizing a workshop on Fourier Transform Mass Spectrometry (FTMS) for Isotope Ratio Measurements on 13 April 2026.
Join leading experts at the BIPM to explore the latest advancements in isotope ratio metrology. This workshop will highlight the potential of FTMS technologies for precise isotope ratio measurements and foster collaboration among specialists from across the global metrology community.
Expected Outcomes
Participants will:
- Develop a deeper understanding of how Fourier Transform Mass Spectrometry (FTMS) technologies contribute to isotope ratio measurements.
- Gain understanding on the role of software and pulse sequences in isotope ratio measurements and promote broader adoption of FAIR data principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable).
- Identify key metrological challenges and formulate recommendations for implementing metrologically sound isotope ratio measurements using FTMS.
