Former les leaders de la métrologie de demain : 8e cycle du projet de détachements BIPM–TÜBİTAK UME
As science and technology evolve, the next generation of metrologists will be tasked with addressing new challenges—from digital transformation to emerging fields like quantum technologies. Preparing them with the skills, networks and international experience they need today is vital for the resilience of tomorrow’s global measurement system.
The BIPM–TÜBİTAK UME Project Placement Programme is one way the metrology community is rising to this challenge. Now in its eighth cycle, the initiative gives early-career metrologists the chance to deepen their technical expertise, gain international experience, and strengthen their understanding of the CIPM Mutual Recognition Arrangement (CIPM MRA).
Starting from 1 September 2025, the latest cycle brings together 10 young metrologists from Albania, Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Colombia, Egypt, Malaysia, Norway, Ukraine, Uzbekistan and Vietnam. Each participant is carrying out a dedicated project in TÜBİTAK UME’s laboratories, while also taking part in e-learning and seminars led by experts from the BIPM and TÜBİTAK UME.

A forum for learning and exchange
The programme provides much more than laboratory training. It also gives participants the chance to explore the mechanisms of the CIPM MRA, exchange ideas with peers, and build professional networks that will support their future work. As part of this programme, participants attended a CIPM MRA Seminar 1-2 October.
“What made this a truly special event for me was the chance to exchange ideas with these talented young metrologists, who will be running measurement science in the future. Their ambitions, questions and reflections on achieving international acceptance of measurements were inspiring.” — Chingis Kuanbayev, CBKT Programme Manager, BIPM
By equipping young metrologists with hands-on skills and knowledge of international best practices, the programme helps National Metrology Institutes (NMIs) to strengthen their own capabilities. In turn, this supports the global system by ensuring more NMIs can contribute actively to comparisons, calibration services and the recognition of measurements worldwide.

About the Programme
The BIPM–TÜBİTAK UME Project Placement Programme supports early-career metrologists through laboratory placements, e-learning and expert-led seminars. Participants strengthen their understanding of the CIPM MRA and the internationally recognized Calibration and Measurement Capabilities (CMCs) published in the BIPM Key Comparison Database (KCDB), while building practical skills that benefit their NMIs and the global metrology community.
