Comments Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a class of carcinogenic organic compounds formed from the incomplete combustion of organic matter, primarily originating from sources such as industrial emissions, vehicle exhaust, and tobacco smoke. Due to their hydrophobic nature, PAHs tend to accumulate in sediments and are widely used as indicators of environmental pollution.

In April 2023, the CCQM Organic Analysis Working Group (OAWG) decided to conduct a track A key comparison/pilot study (CCQM-K184/P235) low-polarity analytes in abiotic matrix: PAHs in sediment. This study aligns with the OAWG strategy document for 2021-2030, which prioritizes services supporting the environmental sector, particularly in the category of "analytes in abiotic matrices".

By participating in CCQM-K184, National Metrology Institutes (NMIs) and Designated Institutes (DIs) will demonstrate their capabilities in measuring low-polarity contaminants (with molecular masses ranging from 170 g/mol to 500 g/mol and pKow < -2) in an abiotic dried matrix, covering a mass fraction range from 100 µg/kg to 1,000,000 µg/kg. Successful participation in this comparison will serve as essential evidence for NMIs and DIs to extend or support their Measurement Capabilities (CMCs) in this area.

MEASURAND   Mass fraction of fluoranthene

The key comparison reference value xR and its associated standard uncertainty uR are computed using the Hierarchical Bayes approach, which incorporates an estimate for the dark uncertainty τ. The calculation excluded the results from CENAM, IH-LQPM, INM (CO), and INTI as explained on page 22 of the CCQM-K184 Final report.

        xR = 2314 μg/kg     uR = 49 μg/kg

The degree of equivalence of laboratory i relative to the key comparison reference value xR is given by a pair of terms, both expressed in μg/kg:

Di = (xi - xR) and its expanded uncertainty Ui at a 95 % level of confidence where Ui  includes the dark uncertainty τ.
