General Conference on Weights and Measures 28th meeting - 13-15 October 2026
About the BIPM
Key topics
The BIPM is an international organization established by the Metre Convention, through which Member States act together on matters related to measurement science and measurement standards.
The SI is the recommended practical system of units of measurement. Following a landmark decision by the CGPM in 2018, all SI units are now defined in terms of constants that describe the natural world. This assures the future stability of the SI and opens the opportunity for the use of new technologies, including quantum technologies, to implement the definitions.
There are currently 64 States Parties to the Metre Convention ("Member States"), and 37 Associate States and Economies.
The BIPM's CBKT programme aims to increase the effectiveness with which Member States and Associates engage in the world-wide coordinated metrological system.
There are now 259 institutes participating in the CIPM MRA, the framework through which metrology institutes demonstrate the international equivalence of their measurement standards and the calibration and measurement certificates they issue.
The BIPM has a permanent staff of about 70, coming from 15 different countries, and a number of secondees from NMIs and DIs around the world. The BIPM's work programme is voted by the CGPM and supervised by the CIPM.
