About the CGPM

The General Conference on Weights and Measures (CGPM) is the BIPM's plenary and policy-making body and supreme authority, composed of representatives of Member States. It meets every four to six years to make decisions on scientific, institutional and financial matters related to the BIPM and its work.

The General Conference on Weights and Measures (CGPM) will meet
from Tuesday 13 to Thursday 15 October 2026
at the Palais des Congrès de Versailles, 10 rue de la Chancellerie, 78000 Versailles, Yvelines, France.

Authority of the CGPM

“The International Bureau shall operate under the exclusive direction and supervision of an International Committee for Weights and Measures, itself placed under the authority of a General Conference on Weights and Measures consisting of the delegates of all the contracting Governments.”

Mandate and voting

“The General Conference, mentioned in Article 3 of the Convention, shall meet in Paris, on the convocation of the International Committee at least once every six years. Its mission is to discuss and instigate measures necessary for the propagation and improvement of the metric system as well as to approve new fundamental metrological determinations that might have been made in the interval between its meetings. It receives the Report of the International Committee on work accomplished […].
Votes at a General Conference are made by States, each State has the right to one vote. Members of the International Committee have a seat as of right at meetings of the Conference; they may, at the same time, be delegates of their Governments.”
