The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations (UN). It is the UN system's authoritative voice on the state and behaviour of the Earth's atmosphere, its interaction with the oceans, the climate it produces and the resulting distribution of water resources. The World Meteorological Organization is an intergovernmental organization with a membership of 185 Member States and 6 Member Territories.
The WMO Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW) was established in 1989 by the 11th World Meteorological Congress (Cg-XI). GAW is one of WMO's most important contributions to the study of environmental issues in the post-UNCED period (United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, 1992).
