Organisation internationale de normalisation (ISO)

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) develops and publishes voluntary International Standards, which give state-of-the-art specifications for products, services and good practice, helping to make industry more efficient and effective. Developed through global consensus, ISO standards help to break down barriers to international trade.

The BIPM and ISO cooperate to ensure appropriate and consistent use of SI units, and the correct treatment of other metrological aspects, in ISO standards.

Links between the BIPM and the ISO:

  • The BIPM interacts with ISO at senior level through an annual multilateral meetings at the BIPM (with ILAC and the OIML);
  • ISO is one of the partners in INetQI;
  • ISO is a member of the JCGM;
  • ISO/TC 12: Quantities and units participates in the CCU;
  • ISO/TC 43/SC 3: Underwater acoustics and ISO/TC 108/WG 34: Calibration of vibration and shock transducers participate in the CCAUV;
  • ISO/TC 213: Dimensional and geometrical product specifications and verification participates in the CCL;
  • The BIPM has Liaison A status (Organizations that make an effective contribution to the work of the technical committee or subcommittee for questions dealt with by this technical committee or subcommittee) with the following ISO Committees:
    • ISO/CASCO: Committee on conformity assessment
    • ISO/REMCO: Committee on reference materials
    • ISO/TC 12: Quantities and units
    • ISO/TC 43/SC 3: Underwater acoustics
    • ISO/TC 85/SC 2: Radiological protection
    • ISO/TC 146: Air quality
    • ISO/TC 146/SC 3: Ambient atmospheres
    • ISO/TC 212: Clinical laboratory testing and in vitro diagnostic test systems
