The mission of the European Space Agency (ESA) is to shape the development of Europe's space capability and ensure that investment in space continues to deliver benefits to the citizens of Europe and the world.

ESA is responsible for developing and operating the European Galileo Global Navigation Satellite System. Galileo will provide an independent tool for time comparisons in the maintenance of the international timing network and together with other existing and incoming systems will increase the redundancy in the timing network and thus enhance the reliability of time metrology.
