As of 17 August 2016, there are 58 Member States, and 41 Associates.

    First time transfer experiment with BeiDou satellites over multiple baselines [2017]  
The installation of two BeiDou time and frequency transfer systems at the BIPM has allowed the establishment of the first long-distance baseline for clock comparison between the NIM and the BIPM with BeiDou satellites .
    50th anniversary of the adoption of the atomic definition of the second [2017]  
On 13 October 1967, the CGPM took the decision to adopt a new definition of the unit of time, the second, based on an atomic transition. The CCTF commemorated the 50th anniversary of this fundamental decision at its meeting in June 2017.
    Metrology in support of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development [2017]  
A new brochure "The role of metrology in the context of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals" has been jointly developed by UNIDO, the BIPM and the OIML.
    Promoting traceability in laboratory medicine: new JCTLM website launched [2017]  
A new website launched by the JCTLM is aimed at increasing the understanding of metrological traceability and its impact on the consistency of test results in laboratory medicine.
    World Metrology Day 2017 "Measurements for transport" [2017]  
The 2017 World Metrology Day website is now live and this year's theme is "Measurements for transport". World Metrology Day is an annual celebration of the signing of the Metre Convention on 20 May 1875.

    Human Resources collaboration between NIST and the BIPM [2016]  
As part of the BIPM's objective to continuously improve its administrative procedures, Ms Susanne Porch, Human Resources Director, NIST (USA), visited the BIPM on 5-8 September 2016 to share experience on HR best practices.
    Katharine Gebbie (1932-2016) [2016]  
We are sorry to report the death of Katharine Gebbie on 17 August 2016 at the age of 84. Dr Gebbie was a visionary physicist and senior government research administrator at NIST (USA). Her contributions to international metrology were highly regarded around the world and included membership of the CIPM from 1994 to 2000, where she served as Vice-President for three years.
    New Associate of the CGPM: Sri Lanka [2016]  
The Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka became an Associate of the CGPM on 17 August 2016.
    Leap second to be added to UTC at end of 2016 [2016]  
The IERS has announced that a leap second will be added to UTC at the end of 2016.
    New Member State: Slovenia [2016]  
The Republic of Slovenia, which has been an Associate since 2003, became a Member State on 23 March 2016.
    World Metrology Day 2016 was a great success [2016]  
World Metrology Day 2016, which was on the theme of 'Measurements in a dynamic world', was a great success, with the number of hits on the website and downloads setting a new record.
    The BIPM chairs the DCMAS Network 2016 meeting [2016]  
The 2016 DCMAS Network meeting, hosted at the BIPM, progressed a range of knowledge transfer, capacity building, and training initiatives supporting the DCMAS objectives and helping developing countries and economies around the world.
    New Associate of the CGPM: Qatar [2016]  
The State of Qatar became an Associate of the CGPM on 10 March 2016.
    The BIPM and ILAC sign an updated MoU [2016]  
An updated version of the BIPM-ILAC Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed at the BIPM on 8 March 2016 to reaffirm their cooperation.
    President of ISO visits the BIPM [2016]  
The BIPM hosted a high-level delegation from ISO, AFNOR and ANSTEEL on 26 February 2016 to discuss topics of mutual interest and to strengthen cooperation.
    BIPM expresses its condolences for the victims of the Paris attacks [2015]  
The heartfelt thoughts and condolences of the BIPM are with the people of our host country France and most especially the families of the victims of the recent atrocities in Paris.
At this time we remember that the work of the BIPM is international; we will be resolute in continuing to work together with colleagues from all over the world.
All meetings planned to take place in November and December at the BIPM will proceed as planned.
    New Member State: United Arab Emirates [2015]  
The United Arab Emirates became a Member State on 27 April 2015.
    New Member State: Lithuania [2015]  
The Republic of Lithuania, which has been an Associate since 2001, became a Member State on 16 April 2015.
    Prof. Ian Mills awarded an OBE for services to chemistry and metrology [2015]  
Prof. Ian Mills, FRS, former President of the CCU was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the UK's 2015 New Year honours. The award is in recognition of Professor Mills' services to Chemistry and Metrology. Prof. Mills stepped down from the role of CCU President at the end of 2013 after 17 years of service. The CIPM appointed him as an honorary member of the CCU in March 2014.
    New Associate of the CGPM: Azerbaijan [2015]  
As of 1 January 2015, the Republic of Azerbaijan is an Associate of the CGPM.
    Explaining and promoting the Quality Infrastructure [2014]  
The Donor Committee for Enterprise Development (DCED) has published a report "Leveraging the Impact of Business Environment Reform: The Contribution of Quality Infrastructure – Lessons from Practice", which presents an aggregated collection of knowledge and experience in donor-supported quality infrastructure reform in developing and transition countries.
    Timetable for future revision of the International System of Units [2014]  
A joint CCM/CCU roadmap towards the redefinition of the SI has been published.
    Notification 2015 [2014]  
The formal Notification of Contributions for 2015, listing the contributions due by Member States and the subscriptions due by Associates of the CGPM, is now available for download. An unofficial version in English is also available.
    Texts of the CGPM Resolutions (2014) [2014]  
At its 25th meeting (2014) the CGPM adopted five Resolutions, the texts of which are now available for download in English and French.
    New Associate of the CGPM: Yemen [2014]  
As of 21 July 2014, the Republic of Yemen is an Associate of the CGPM.
    New Associate of the CGPM: Sudan [2014]  
The Republic of the Sudan became an Associate of the CGPM on 26 June 2014.
    Support from NMIJ for the BIPM Comparison Programme on Pure Organic Calibrators [2014]  
The BIPM Director, Dr Martin Milton, and the Director of the NMIJ, Dr Yukinobu Miki, have signed an agreement between the NMIJ/AIST and the BIPM related to the development and application of quantitative NMR (qNMR) for organic primary comparisons. This collaborative agreement will support the BIPM's activity in coordinating key comparisons and lead to improved qNMR analytical methods and procedures being made available to all Member States and Associates of the CGPM.
    President of the Institute Council of METAS visits the BIPM [2014]  
Professor Martina Hirayama, President of the Institute Council of METAS (Switzerland), and Dr Christian Bock, Director of METAS, visited the BIPM on 15 May 2014. They were welcomed by the Director before receiving a presentation on the mission, role, objectives and history of the BIPM. The visit included a tour of the BIPM's laboratories, where they were joined by Ms Céline Pascale who is on secondment from METAS, working in the BIPM Chemistry Department until 31 July 2014.
    New Associate of the CGPM: Luxembourg [2014]  
The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg became an Associate of the CGPM on 29 January 2014.
    Preliminary information about the 25th meeting of the General Conference on Weights and Measures [2014]  
Preliminary information about the 2014 meeting of the CGPM is now available on the BIPM website. Further details will be added shortly, after the March 2014 meeting of the CIPM.
Note: The CGPM is made up of delegates of the governments of the Member States with observers from the Associates of the CGPM.
    New Member State: Iraq [2013]  
The Republic of Iraq became a Member State on 20 August 2013.
    New Associate of the CGPM: Mongolia [2013]  
Mongolia became an Associate of the CGPM on 7 August 2013.
    Metrology training courses aimed at assisting developing countries [2013]  
NMI- and RMO-run metrology training courses aimed specifically at assisting developing countries are now listed under the BIPM banner on the DCMAS Network website. Details of other such courses, including appropriate text, links and documents, should please be submitted by email for inclusion in the list.

Conferences, workshops and general assemblies will continue to be listed on the BIPM website.

    Hugh Preston-Thomas, 23 December 1923 - 11 August 2012 [2012]  
It is with great sadness that the BIPM has learnt of the death of Hugh Preston-Thomas, Honorary Member of the CIPM.
    Memorandum of Understanding between the BIPM and the IAEA [2012]  
The BIPM and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding on 25 June 2012, formalizing more than 50 years of close working relations between the two organizations in the field of radiation measurements.
    New Associate of the CGPM: Syria [2012]  
As of 31 May 2012, the Syrian Arab Republic is an Associate of the CGPM.
    New Associate of the CGPM: Botswana [2012]  
As of 30 May 2012, Botswana is an Associate of the CGPM.
    New Associate of the CGPM: Oman [2012]  
As of 8 May 2012, Oman is an Associate of the CGPM.
    The BIPM, OIML, ILAC and ISO have issued a joint declaration on metrological traceability [2011]  
This declaration from the four internationally recognized bodies responsible for metrology, accreditation and standardization world-wide, addresses everyone for whom traceability is important.
    Resolutions of the CGPM (2011) [2011]  
Resolutions adopted at the 24th meeting of the CGPM (17–21 October 2011)
    Dr Takashi Usuda has been awarded the Ichimura Prize in Technology [2011]  
Dr Takashi Usuda, a visiting scientist at the BIPM, was awarded this prestigious prize on 28 April 2011 by the New Technology Development Foundation, Japan, for his contribution to improvement of the National Metrology Standard of Vibration Measurement.
The award was in recognition of his work on development of a laser interferometer for vibration acceleration calibration. The laser interferometer enables high resolution and robust characteristics against vibration noise*. He also established the national calibration programme for vibration acceleration in Japan. His achievements improved the Japanese metrology standard of vibration measurement and ensured the traceability of vibration measurements in industry to the national standard.

    New Member State: Saudi Arabia [2011]  
The BIPM is pleased to announce that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia acceded to the BIPM on 11 February 2011, bringing the number of Member States to 55.
