We are sorry to report the death of Katharine Gebbie on 17 August 2016 at the age of 84. Dr Gebbie was a visionary physicist and senior government research administrator at NIST (USA). Her contributions to international metrology were highly regarded around the world and included membership of the CIPM from 1994 to 2000, where she served as Vice-President for three years.

Prof. Ian Mills, FRS, former President of the CCU was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the UK's 2015 New Year honours. The award is in recognition of Professor Mills' services to Chemistry and Metrology. Prof. Mills stepped down from the role of CCU President at the end of 2013 after 17 years of service. The CIPM appointed him as an honorary member of the CCU in March 2014.

The BIPM Director, Dr Martin Milton, and the Director of the NMIJ, Dr Yukinobu Miki, have signed an agreement between the NMIJ/AIST and the BIPM related to the development and application of quantitative NMR (qNMR) for organic primary comparisons. This collaborative agreement will support the BIPM's activity in coordinating key comparisons and lead to improved qNMR analytical methods and procedures being made available to all Member States and Associates of the CGPM.

Professor Martina Hirayama, President of the Institute Council of METAS (Switzerland), and Dr Christian Bock, Director of METAS, visited the BIPM on 15 May 2014. They were welcomed by the Director before receiving a presentation on the mission, role, objectives and history of the BIPM. The visit included a tour of the BIPM's laboratories, where they were joined by Ms Céline Pascale who is on secondment from METAS, working in the BIPM Chemistry Department until 31 July 2014.

Resolutions adopted at the 24th meeting of the CGPM (1721 October 2011)

Dr Takashi Usuda, a visiting scientist at the BIPM, was awarded this prestigious prize on 28 April 2011 by the New Technology Development Foundation, Japan, for his contribution to improvement of the National Metrology Standard of Vibration Measurement.
The award was in recognition of his work on development of a laser interferometer for vibration acceleration calibration. The laser interferometer enables high resolution and robust characteristics against vibration noise*. He also established the national calibration programme for vibration acceleration in Japan. His achievements improved the Japanese metrology standard of vibration measurement and ensured the traceability of vibration measurements in industry to the national standard.
