Significant progress on the BIPM Kibble balance

The Physical Metrology Department is pleased to announce that the BIPM Kibble balance has been operating continuously and reliably under vacuum since mid-2018.

The alignment of the apparatus has been further improved and a Josephson voltage standard has been integrated. As a consequence of the recent improvements, the measurement uncertainty of the Planck constant has been reduced from the 10-6 to the 10-7 level. Measurements are carried out using either a 1 kg stainless steel or a 1 kg Pt-Ir mass standard.

Further studies will be conducted in the near future for the establishment of a complete uncertainty budget. It is also foreseen that several further refinements will be implemented with the objective of being ready for participation in the first ongoing key comparison of realizations of the kilogram following its redefinition.
