Katharine Gebbie (1932-2016)

We are sorry to report the death of Dr Katharine Gebbie on 17 August 2016 at the age of 84.

Katharine Gebbie was a visionary physicist and senior government research administrator at NIST (USA). Her contributions to international metrology were highly regarded around the world and included membership of the CIPM from 1994 to 2000, where she served as Vice-President for three years.

She worked at NIST for a total of 48 years, and was still serving in the role of Senior Advisor to the Director of the NIST Physical Measurement Laboratory at the time of her death.
