The 2014 PTTI (Precise Time and Time Interval Systems and Applications) Distinguished Service Award was presented to Dr Włodzimierz Lewandowski for the development of and support to new and refined time transfer techniques and for his contribution to civil applications of satellite navigation systems.

The PTTI recognized his work at the BIPM on the evaluation and dissemination of UTC, particularly his involvement in research on Global Navigation Satellite Systems time transfer, as well as the 26 years of activity on the Civil GPS Service Interface Committee (CGSIC), where he chairs the Timing Subcommittee.

Dr Lewandowski retired from the BIPM, where he was Principal Physicist in the Time Department, in May 2014 after 28 years service. He established close cooperation with the GNSS agencies, and in the last few years collaborated with the European Commission as an expert for the development of the Galileo system.

When receiving his Award, a clock as a symbol of his career, Dr Lewandowski acknowledged the close cooperation with his colleagues at the BIPM and in different institutes around the world.

He remains a member of the European Space Agency's Programme Board on Satellite Navigation (PB-NAV), which decides the ESA navigation programme.
