New President of the CCPR takes office

Dr Maria Luisa Rastello, INRIM (Italy) and CIPM Member, has officially taken over the Presidency of the Consultative Committee for Photometry and Radiometry (CCPR) from Dr Takashi Usuda, NMIJ AIST (Japan). The handover of responsibilities took place at a meeting to discuss CCPR presidential activities which was held in Turin (Italy) on 17 March 2017. The meeting was also attended by Dr Joële Viallon, Executive Secretary of the CCPR.

Dr Rastello has been the Scientific Director of the Istituto Nazionale di Ricerca Metrologica (INRIM) since 2014. She has long-standing experience of metrology, mainly in areas congruent with the CCPR. Her research interests are concerned with the metrology of optical radiation, the realization of the SI units, the absolute characterization of photo-detectors and radiation sources, and quantum optics. She pioneered metrology for Quantum Communications by weak laser beams, and the photon counting techniques for absolute radiometry. She also introduced the concept and contributed to the realization of photon-number resolving detectors for space applications.

Since 2016, Dr Rastello has been a member of the European Commission Expert Group on Quantum Technology Flagship - High Level Steering Committee (HLSC). The Commission appointed the HLSC to oversee the preparatory phase of the Quantum Flagship and provide recommendations on various aspects. Also since 2016, she has been vice President (GA) of EURAMET and in 2013-2016 she was a member of the EURAMET Board of Directors. In 2003-2006, Dr Rastello chaired the EURAMET Technical Committee on Photometry and Radiometry (TC-PR) and contributed to the Strategic Planning and Roadmapping within the European Metrology Research Programme.

Dr Usuda, who is also a CIPM Member, has stepped down as President of the CCPR but will continue as President of the Consultative Committee for Acoustics, Ultrasound and Vibration (CCAUV). Dr Rastello was provisionally elected to the CIPM on 7 December 2016.
