The French Republic
signed the Metre Convention in 1875.

In recognition of the role of France as the originator of the metric system and depository of the Metre Convention, one member of the CIPM is always of French nationality.
Mr Luc Érard, Directeur de la recherche scientifique et technologique of the LNE, was elected to this post in 2004.
Mr Érard is President of the Consultative Committee for Time and Frequency (CCTF).
