The CCU was set up in 1964, to replace the "Commission for the System of Units", set up by the CIPM in 1954.

Present activities concern matters related to the development of the International System of Units (SI), preparation of successive editions of the SI brochure, and advice to the CIPM on matters concerning units of measurement.
