The BIPM and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have worked closely together in the field of radiation measurements since 1972.
The IAEA use the BIPM to calibrate their secondary standards, and Dr P.J. Allisy-Roberts, head of the BIPM's ionizing radiation section, is currently chairman of their standing SSDL Scientific Committee.
The IAEA signed the CIPM MRA in 1999 and were one of the first laboratories to publish their CMCs in the KCDB. They are Observers of Sections I and III of the Consultative Committee for Ionizing Radiation (CCRI), and have recently achieved this status also on Section II as they are re-establishing a traceability chain for activity standards in nuclear medicine to their Member States.
The IAEA is also a full Member of the Consultative Committee for Amount of Substance (CCQM) and takes part in CCQM key comparisons.
