Recognizing the need for standardized, accurate and reliable data in the fields of food safety and analysis, the BIPM now has official Observer status at meetings of the Codex Alimentarius Commission (Joint FAO/WHO Food Standards Programme). The Codex Alimentarius Commission develops food standards, guidelines and related texts such as codes of practice under the Joint FAO/WHO Food Standards Programme, the main purposes of which are protecting health of the consumers and ensuring fair trade practices, and promoting coordination of all food standards work undertaken by international governmental and non-governmental organizations.
